Magpies Are Enjoying Getting Food For Bottle Caps From A Special Bird Feeder

Many animals have the level of intelligence that makes them learn new tricks. Equipped with this knowledge, Hans Forsberg decided to train magpies to get food by recycling bottle caps.

He decided to put to use the curiosity and intelligence of the pair of magpies that made his backyard home. He came up with a machine that would get the birds to clean up his yard and get food as pay-back.

He did not find anything of the kind on the internet. So he did it from scratch.

The machine has a dispenser where the bird food goes. Then there is a tube that runs to a funnel, then a base where bits of bird food gets dropped.

Then there is the Raspberry Pi System, whose camera monitors everything. There are detectors and electronics placed under the table that triggers the bird food to come down.

Training the magpies took several years. The magpies were suspicious. It took his patient feeding and getting the birds to be curious about the bird feeder. Their offspring easily adjusted to the system.

More on the complicated mechanisms that make the machine operational is on Hackster. He hopes that in the future, he can get them to pick other kinds of trash. Some were a little too critical of the system.
