Hummingbirds’ Flattering Wings Draw Rainbows in Dazzling Array

If one dares to look more closely, they will see nature’s magic unfolding every day.

Christian Spencer discovered this as he was watching a Jacobin hummingbird from his verandah. The way the sun’s rays passed through its wings creating a light prism of wonder. The little bird appeared to have rainbow wings.

The diffraction of daylight was the special effect.

These movements were captured for Spencer’s 2011film, “The Dance of Time,” that has brought him “best film” honors (three) and ten international awards.

Several years later, he photographed the same phenomena for his “Winged Prism” series. When interviewed by “My Modern Net,” he said that the photos brought out something that cannot be captured by the eye. He added that there was no digital maneuvering of any kind. It was the light playing its own tricks.

No one could have ever figured out how phenomenal the photos would be. Spencer receives daily emails from all over the world informing him of the impression they have made in their perception of nature. The social media response was introspective and reflective of the wonders that nature provides.
